Materials Needed:

  • Cotton yarn (medium weight)
  • Crochet hook (size 5mm)
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle

Pattern Overview:

This tutorial will guide you through making a simple round coaster using basic crochet stitches. The finished size is approximately 5 inches in diameter.

Instructions:

  1. Start with a Magic Circle:
    • Wrap the yarn around your fingers to create a loop. Secure this loop by inserting your hook into the loop, grabbing the yarn and pulling it back through the loop. Then chain 3. This counts as your first double crochet (dc).
  2. Round 1:
    • Work 19 dc into the center of the magic circle. Join to the top of the first dc with a slip stitch to complete the round.
  3. Round 2:
    • optional: you can choose to switch colors here or keep the same color. if changing colors, tie off the yarn from the previous round and then use a slip stitch to attach the new color yarn
    • Chain 3 (counts as first dc). Make 1 dc in the next stitch and then chain 2. dc, dc and then chain 2. You will repeat this pattern all the way around. dc, dc, chain 2. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the chain 2.
  4. Round 3:
    • Chain 3. In the gap where we chained 2 in the previous round we are going to make 2 dc and then chain 2. In that same space we will make 2 more dc, for a total of 4 dc in that space. In the next gap you will repeat the pattern 2 dc, chain 2, 2 dc. Repeat this pattern (2 dc, chain 2, 2 dc) around the circle. Your starting chain 3 will be your ‘4th’ dc in the final grouping of the pattern. Join with a slip stitch to top of chain 3.
  5. Round 4:
    • optional: you can choose to switch colors here or keep the same color. if changing colors, tie off the yarn from the previous round and then use a slip stitch to attach the new color yarn
    • chain 3. In the chain 2 gap from the previous round, you are going to slip stitch (sl st) and then 6 dc. in next gap, single crochet (sc). in next gap, 6 dc then in next gap sc. repeat this pattern ( 6 dc, sc, 6 dc, sc) all the way around.
    • note: as a visual help, you will see a high point and a low point from round 3. The low point is where you 6 dc, the high point is where you sc.
    • To finish in the last gap, you are only going to dc 5 because the starting chain 3 will act as the 6th dc. Join with a slip stitch to finish off!
  6. Finishing:
    • Once you’ve completed the last round, cut the yarn leaving a small tail. Pull this tail through the last loop on your hook to secure it. Weave in the ends using your yarn needle to give your coaster a tidy finish.

Tips for Success:

  • Make sure your stitches are not too tight; this will help keep the coaster flat rather than cupping.
  • You can use different color yarns to create colorful patterns or simple stripes.
  • Cotton yarn is recommended because it is absorbent and durable, perfect for coasters.

Cleaning and Maintenance:

  • Cotton coasters are generally machine washable, but check the yarn label to be sure. Wash them on a gentle cycle and lay flat to dry to maintain their shape.

Enjoy your handmade crochet coasters with your favorite drinks, or gift them to friends and family! They make a lovely addition to any home and are a testament to your crafting skills.
